Homeschooling in Tennessee
Homeschooling in Tennessee is actually quite easy and effortless. Step 1 is to choose an umbrella school to register with. Once your child is 6 years old is when you have to register them I like to go with the lowest input and least hassle approach, and so I’ve chosen to use Honor School as our Umbrella. It is incredibly inexpensive (around $30 for the family for the year) to register and then at the end of the year they email you to ask about your child’s attendance and that’s it! You get the ability to download a teacher’s ID card and student ID cards in order to get any discounts around town.
There are many umbrella schools you can choose from. Some are associated with different Church groups, and some have heavy involvement in helping you plan and figure out what curriculum you will use and they even have teachers that can help you! Honor school does not require you to have your children take the state tests, but some other umbrellas do require it.
The last option is to register to homeschool through your local school district. This does mean that you’d be required to test.
You also have the option to do any sports through your local public school, and many of the Catholic Schools also offer this opportunity to the local homeschoolers. Immaculate Heart of Mary Hybrid co-op and Chesterton High School also offer programs where homeschool students can join in on sports and extracurriculars.
